چکیده

where i, r, and t label the incident, reflected, and transmitted waves, respectively. The solution is based on the fact that eq. (1) holds separately for each polarization of the emitted radiation, and is also independent of the angle of the radiation. This result is implicit in Planck’s derivation [5] of Kirchhoff’s law of radiation, and is stated explicitly in [6]. That law describes the thermodynamic equilibrium of radiation emitted and absorbed throughout a volume. The emissivity Pv and the absorption coefficient Aν can depend on the polarization of the radiation and on the angle of the radiation, but the definitions of polarization parallel and perpendicular to a plane of emission, and of angle relative to the normal to a surface element, are local, while the energy conservation relation Pν = AνK(ν, T ) is global. A “ray” of radiation whose polarization can be described as parallel to the plane of emission is, in general, a mixture of parallel and perpendicular polarization from the point of view of the absorption process. Similarly, the angles of emission and absorption of a ray

A Parameterized Microwave Emissivity Model for Bare Soil Surfaces

Due to the difficulty in accurately interpreting surface emissivity spectra, problems remain in the application of passive microwave satellite observations over land surfaces. This study develops a parameterized soil surface emissivity model to quantify the microwave emissivity accurately and rapidly for Gaussian-correlated rough surfaces. We first analyze the sensitivity of surface emissivity ...

The dependence of nadir ocean surface emissivity on wind vector as measured with microwave radiometer

Global brightness temperature observations of TOPEX/Poseidon microwave radiometer (TMR) at 18, 21, and 37 GHz have been collocated with near-simultaneous SeaWinds wind vector data as well as with monthly sea surface temperature and salinity products. The combined data allow us to study the dependence of zenith-directed ocean surface emissivity, at each frequency, upon both wind speed and direct...

Simulations of polarization from accretion disks

The Monte Carlo Method was used to estimate the level of polarization from axisymmetric accretion disks similar to those in low-mass X-ray binaries and some classes of cataclysmic variables. In low-mass X-ray binaries electron scattering is supposed to be the dominant opacity source in the inner disk, and most of the optical light is produced in the disk. Thompson scattering occuring in the dis...

Uncertainty in the Temperature of Silicon Wafers Measured by Radiation Thermometry Based upon a Polarization Technique

− The emissivity behaviour of a silicon wafer under various conditions was theoretically and experimentally investigated. As a result, the quantitative relationship between the ratio of p-polarized radiance to spolarized one, and polarized emissivities was obtained irrespective of the emissivity change of wafers due to the oxide film thickness under the wide variations of resistivity. Based on ...

Emissivity Measurements of Foam-Covered Water Surface at L-Band for Low Water Temperatures

For a foam-covered sea surface, it is difficult to retrieve sea surface salinity (SSS) with L-band brightness temperature (1.4 GHz) because of the effect of a foam layer with wind speeds stronger than 7 m/s, especially at low sea surface temperature (SST). With foam-controlled experiments, emissivities of a foam-covered water surface at low SST (−1.4 °C to 1.7 °C) are measured for varying SSS, ...
